1. INTRODUCTION
Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corportation (NTT), the principal telecommunications company in Japan, is one of the world's largest companies and one of its leading telecommunications companies. NTT was established more than 100 years ago and currently has 58 million subscribers and over 500 branches throughout Japan. Globally, the company has currently more than 3,200 customers of which Japanese multinational companies are a major group. In Japan, more than 13 laboratories and R&D centers are in charge of basic and applied science, and system development. Through strategic alliances with companies such as Microsoft, General Magic and Silicon Graphics, NTT intends to provide the means for multimedia communications - the interactive blend of video, animation, sound and text.
This report surveys the history of NTT, and current status related to its expected breakup into several smaller companies. We also summarize anticipated plans for international business (one of the most important consequences of the breakup), especially in Europe.
