Les,

Yeah I know there are anomalies with regards to pay - of course there are a lot of people that are already wealthy that run for office (Dianne Feinstein etc) but I dont think thats an assumption we should make - particularly with the house (and of course the state legislatures). Money does matter to some people - I dont believe George Stephanapolis had any journalistic aspirations for example, but hes doing it for the money. Hes a young guy and I dont think hes rich.

1) Cannot a world class executive make considerably more money heading a Fortune 1000 or a Silicon Valley startup?

Generally a startup is more lucrative - but Im not sure I see your point here? Explain.

2) Does money really motivate a Washington politician or is it the potential for great power and influence?

I think both. I cant think of many (if anyone) motivated by one and not the other. Im just thinking that, if you are a politician making no money, then the entire time you are in office you might be concerned with your own financial future and contacts made there. This might cause you to be more sensitive to certain lobbies etc. But if you had a job that compensated you fairly then you might be more concerned with staying in office and trying to do a good job.

I havent thought this through - its just a thought.
