OK OK. I'll give a quick overview. Michelle got me.

Business Objects, Hummingbird and Cognos are the query tools vendors. Imagine Excel on steroids for enhanced business reporting. (I know these folks the least, hence my trying to weasel out.)

Essbase and the related tool sets from the Arbor portion of Hyperion act as the engine for storing, calculating and manipulating the data to be analyzed. Somewhat like a database, but in essbase's case the information stored in the cube is often a summary of the underlying source rdbms data. It is stored in a memory based architecture for dynamic responses to queries that may change quite a bit.

Keep your eyes on the upcoming AIS product from HYSL. It will allow faster creation and modification of OLAP cubes and should enable some new and interesting partnerships for the company. Rapid deployment equals improved ROI.

Most of HYSL's license revenues come from applications. Hyperion Enterprise is a high end consolidation engine that allows a large organization to consolidate financial results from multiple divisions or departments. Very useful for global operations with all of the currency and intra-company stuff. Minimal competition, not huge growth, but a vast and loyal customer base.

Pillar is a rapidly growing budgeting and analysis application. Imagine a sort of distributed EXCEL on steroids optimized for a global budgeting and planning process. You can spin out portions of department specific budgets for managers to work with on their remote systems. They can look at (and change the data) in any dimension and then securely integrate it back with a master plan. (I'm really new to HYSL stuff, so I might have butchered that explanation.)

Caveat: It has been a long time since I have been a practicing geek like Michelle. My explanations are quite simplified and based only on product "demos." Nigel P's Olap report is by a well regarded industry consultant. There's lots of good material on his website.
