Q. Where did network switch maker Plaintree Systems get its name?

A. According to Plaintree Vice President of Marketing Paul Weiss, this is the story: "Back in the early '90s, when Plaintree was operating under a different name and decided to launch itself into the Ethernet switching market, the company came up with innovative ideas for 100M bit/sec uplinks from Ethernet workgroup switches. Plaintree and Grand Junction were the two pioneers of Fast Ethernet, but fully a year before there was such a thing as Fast Ethernet, Plaintree had its own version, which the company dubbed 'WaveBus.' WaveBus runs at 100M bit/sec and uses Ethernet framing, but includes a few features that didn't make it into the Fast Ethernet spec (most notably, a dual homing technique borrowed from FDDI that many now wish was part of the 10/100/1000 Ethernet portfolio). Networks built with Ethernet switching and 100M bit/sec uplinks formed a hierarchical tree structure that combined high performance with stark simplicity (performance simplicity is still the Plaintree message). Such networks were, in fact, plain (simple) trees, and thus the name 'Plaintree."'
