Different spin on the Network World article from HPCwire:

I just got my e-mail edition HPCwire and in article 13711 Alteon and Extreme View Gigabit Ethernet Vs. Fibre Channel, the basic comparison categories that were apparently discussed in Paul Desmond's article were discussed. The categories included packet size, protocol support, behavior on congestion, biggest strength, biggest weakness, bandwidth usage, max info rate, typical max info rate (uncongested), max effective rate congested and distance between nodes. The categories were interesting because they were compiled by StorageTek, who took the pro FC position. These categories were e-mailed to the GE vendors at Alteon Networks, Extreme Networks, and Packet Engines for rebuttal. No other FC vendors were consulted.

HPCwire's conclusion was that "in most cases FC seemed to hold the edge over GE."
