India to Sell 10 Million Shares in VSNL

By Eric Bellman at Bloomberg News

20-AUG-98

The government may sell 10 million shares of its stake in
Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd., the country's only
international phone company, the Business Standard
newspaper reported, citing no sources.

The sale would raise at least 8 billion rupees ($184
million) and lower the government's stake in the company
to 54% from 65%.

A government committee still has to decide about the
timing of the issue and the portion to be sold at home
and abroad, the daily said. India's Finance Minister
Yashwant Sinha had said in June that the government
will sell shares in four state-controlled companies,
including VSNL, before March 1999.
