The 500 person sample is certainly large enough to generate a scientifically valid survey. Sampling error usually accompanies the poll results.

What is misleading, as you point out, is what questions are being asked and how they are interpreted. For example, one poll last week showed 65% saying Clinton should not be impeached if he had sex with Monica. Another on the same day showed 65% saying he should be impeached if he committed perjury. Naturally, the news "analysts" colored those results the way it suited them.
