Have you ever wondered what egg-sucking actually involves? I have. Often. I've never figured it out."

WILLIAM CECIL MCCONNELL
William Cecil McConnell (Pud) was born on 30 May, 1879 in Brant Township, Bruce County, Ontario Canada. His mother died shortly after he was born and his father is listed as a widower with one child in the 1881 census.

William Cecil grew up on his father's farm near the town of Walkerton in the area where his grandfather originally tamed the wilderness. When he left home as a young man, he hired out as a farm hand in Manitoba, being of a powerful build after so many years of farm work. However, he was so poorly paid and poorly fed that he had to suck eggs to get extra nourishment. He gave up farming and went to work on the railroad, and for the rest of his life he considered himself a '"railroadman". He arrived in Chicago 17 March 1900 and moved on to South Dakota.

Obviously, Janice, "sucking eggs" is the process utilized in getting the stuff out of the egg. The egg is holed and then sucked clean. The reason that the egg is not cracked is that this introduces the risk of losing some of the nourishment. When you are poor and hungry, you cannot afford to lose any of the nourishment! When you are scavenging, you do not know when you will come across the next egg! I am glad that my upbringing allows me to contribute somewhat to the erudition of the civilized world!

This is probably a difficult concept to understand living in a country with the bounties of olive oil and fine wine! (Wilkie Collins said in "The Moonstone"...not an exact quote..."they are noted for love, music, and salad"!
