There are no safe bets in buying stocks. Atmel can always go lower; their large debt is always something to keep in mind. At these levels I think the long term potential justifies the risk however. I would not expect Atmel to drop below $8 unless they come out with some very negative news. I would expect the stock to recover somewhat next week; although it is going to be a long and slow recovery process that is linked to the situation in Asia.

Here is the chart that I was looking at; it looks like Atmel was trading around $8.50 on 1/1/94. So although we are not now at a five year low, it looks from this chart we are getting close.

Chellam purchased his 100,353 of Atmel at prices from $2.16 to $4.25 per share. I originally bought Atmel at $15 thinking it was a real bargain; my average cost is now $10.70 and I still think its a bargain at $8.25.
