Wired Weekly Pick for the week beginning Sunday, August 23, 1998 Object Design, Inc. (NASDAQ: ODIS) ODIS Snapshot: Object Design, Inc. ( objectdesign.com ), the leading object database company, develops and markets the ObjectStore(R) database management system and related tools. ObjectStore(R), with its unique Cache-Forward(TM) database architecture, is used by customers in a wide variety of industries to build and deploy component-based computing applications. The company backs its products with comprehensive training, services, and support. Headquartered in Burlington, Mass., Object Design(R) sells and supports its products through branch offices across the U.S., international subsidiaries in the United Kingdom, Belgium, France, Germany, The Netherlands, Japan, and Australia, and a worldwide network of distributors.
Last Monday the Company announced the introduction of the XML Object Manager, a new database development tool that enables software developers to create highly interactive eXtensible Markup Language (XML)-based Web applications. XML is an emerging universal data transfer standard from the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). The XML Object Manager uses Object Design(R)'s ObjectStore(R) as an XML application database. ObjectStore(R), the industry's leading object database management system (ODBMS), powers many of the world's largest and most successful Internet applications.
The Company was founded in 1988, and first shipped its ObjectStore database management system in 1990. Initially, the Company concentrated on marketing its products for use in engineering design and analysis, telecommunications, finance and other industries that required specialized database management capabilities not readily available from relational database management systems. In late 1995, the Company appointed a new Chief Executive Officer and Chief Operating Officer, replaced several other members of its senior management team and embarked upon a Company-wide restructuring program including layoffs and other expense reduction measures. In 1996, recognizing the potential opportunity created by the rapid growth of the Internet, the Company commenced a new initiative to provide database management solutions for the emerging Internet computing market. In 1997, the Company expanded this initiative beyond the Internet to address the broader market for component-based computing.
So, what's the bottom line? This database technology, the way we understand it, significantly cuts down development time for industry professionals and allows users to access information faster. There, all in one sentence. As for the stock condition of ODIS, our research indicates the Company has a little over 27 million shares out with currently 9.4 million shares in the float. With a 52 week high of 12 5/16, shares of ODIS have pulled back to a current closing price on Friday of 6 3/8. It appears analysts have raised expectations on ODIS for the coming quarter from $.03 to $.04 after a 99% surprise for the previous quarter reported back in July. In addition, ODIS' previous quarterly report revealed revenues for the first six months of 1998 were up 28% collectively over the comparable six month period of 1997 and second quarter revenues were up 40% over the comparable quarter for 1997. In our opinion, ODIS presents an undervalued opportunity for those interested in bottom fishing the software sector which has recently taken a beating. In this volatile market, even we have to remind ourselves to buy low and sell high.
