Ref: Dell for China, Next Stop.....??? & IDC India reports & other stuff.

Tim:

Speaking of the above here is something I found which might be pertinent. Since Dell needs to keep the growth rate in tact, perhaps next stop will be across the border,we shall see.

Excerpt:

'The China market is critically important for us to succeed in the Asia-Pacific region,' according to John Legere, President of Dell Computer Corporation, Asia-Pacific.

Expressing his view on the bullish sentiments of the fast growing market for PCs in China, Legere said his Texas-based Fortune 500 company was also eyeing India.

'Right now we only have indirect sales operations in India. But we intend to focus on India's market potential,' Legere said.

Excerpts:

Forecast for PC shipments in 1997-98 revised downwards

PC shipments in 1997-98 are expected to grow year on year, by only 25.2% against the previous forecast of 35.7%, made by IDC (India) in August 1997. The forecast for value growth has also been revised downwards. The value growth in 1997-98, year on year is now expected at 14.6%, against the previous forecast of 24.4% made by IDC (India). The slow down in PC market has been mainly a result of softness in demand from the corporate and government segments. IDC (India) feels strongly that the overall hardware market is unlikely to grow by more than 16% by value in 1997-98 year on year, against its earlier projection of 24%.

Within the PC market, multinational vendors have been primarily affected by the corporate slowdown. A positive factor supporting the market has been the continuing investment in IT by nationalized banks, financial institutions and large public sector companies. Home and small businesses have offset the weak buying of desktops by corporate and the government segments. During the first half of 1997-98, PC shipments to home and small businesses have shown a growth of more than 50% over the same period in 1996-97. The share of PCs shipped into home and small businesses have increased from 11.2% in 1996-97 to 12.5% in 1997-98.....
