Netscape navigates the dark side of the Web news.com
So, maybe the preview 4.5 is a bit, uh, previewish.
Aiming high, I thought I'd start my smart browsing adventure at the New York Times. OK, the Gray Lady isn't smart enough to run CNET News.com stories, like the Post, but anyone who's spent any time in NYC knows that the citizenry is divided between those who read the Times and those who read the Post, and at least a measurable majority of the island's brain power derives from the former group.
Yeah, and I think Reggie reads the Post. Everybody knows what I read.
Feeling extra brainy after reading up on the latest soiled clothing to come out of Washington, I turned to Netscape's "What's Related" button, courtesy of San Francisco's own Alexa Internet, for some smart suggestions on where to go next.
Imagine my surprise when Netscape/Alexa (Alexscape!) suggested, out of ten recommendations, nine Hollywood movie sites, including Hollydex and the HollywoodNetwork Inner Circle. Tinseltown and the Times--get the connection? Let me in on it if you do.
Somewhat oddly, I happened to install 4.5 today, before or after reading the above, I'm not sure. Then, doubly odd, I happened upon a reference to Alexa internet in this month's Harper's, in the mail today. Experimentally hitting my favorite site, www2.techstocks.com natch, the first thing on the "What's Related" list is, uh, members.tripod.com . Sheesh, I dug up some mushhead's reference to Anne Bingaman as a "legal pit bull" a few weeks back, but this is nuts. Well, there were a couple things that looked related, but also "Russia and former Soviet Republics maps". And Excite, which presumably could be related to just about everything.
I think I'll just stick to the good gray Times.
Cheers, Dan. |
