It would be hard, I agree, to be as unscrupulous as Clinton and Gore. But the amount of money needed to run for president simply can't be raised without giving something away. Why does the tobacco industry give so much money? Why do the teachers unions give so much money? The trial lawyers? They expect something. If they don't get what they expected, they won't give again, and those they elected will die on the vine.

The only permanent way to get out of this mess is to radically reduce the power of the federal government. Move as many functions as possible to the local level, where we can keep an eye on our politicians. As long as the federal government has the amount of money and power it does, and as you point out there are only 500 people to influence (not thousands as at the local level), and it costs so much to win an election, a person of true principles who refuses to compromise those principles for a campaign contribution will be totally unable to be elected. That was my basic point.

I'm afraid I believe too much in the (is it really a) joke that we have the best Congress money can buy.
