NICs push architectural envelope (I2O article)

Plus a little on the new StrongARM.
eet.com

"The StrongARM SA-1500 CPU, however, attaches a media unit to a StrongARM core through a shared bus and 16-kbyte data cache, rather than embedding the unit in a CPU.

Unlike the G4, the SA-1500 has a dedicated prefetch buffer of 256 bytes directly attached to its SIMD AMP processor. There is a second 128-byte streaming buffer glued to the StrongARM execution unit as well. Plus, there is an extra 1 kbyte of data cache that is kept logically separate from the shared cache, and may be used for static data. Hence, the chip is able to provide dedicated buffers both for data that is streaming through the SIMD unit and for repeatedly used static data"
