Win 98 full version

I purchased the full version of Win98 as I thought I would have fewer installation problems. I should have bought the upgrade.

The Win98 installation process is different than the Win95 installation process. A full version of Win95 will allow an installation over an older version of Win95. It seems like a full version of Win 98 does not want to install over an existing Win installation.

It seems like one has to choose between two non standard installations so why pay the extra $ for the full version?? (assuming both are licensed) I think Microsoft screwed up here. If one pays full price the software should load no matter what.

I believe the Win95 upgrade question relates to the FAT16/ FAT 32 issue. Microsoft had to add support for drives larger than 2 gig. They developed FAT 32 for this reason. Since converting from FAT 16 to FAT 32 resulted in some problems in some situations Microsoft chose to restrict the FAT 32 option to OSR2 and to not allow OSR1 users to upgrade. Purchasers of new machines had the OSR2/FAT32 version and original users were stuck with OSR1 and no large harddrive support and no upgrade option.
