<<- Cable modems are a very hot in the consumer/remote access area and ASND does not appear to be trying to capture anything in that area. I think that cable, in time will blow away growth prospects for copper tw pair technologies such as xDSL and 56k dial-up.>>

George,

Good post. I have been in telecom all of my adult life, and have waited for technologies like DSL. So guess what I did. I ordered a cable modem from my cable company. It is being installed on Monday.

I can't believe that the cable industry is beating the telcos for the last mile.

Earlier in the year I invested in a xDSL company. AWRE. The stock rose to about 14 or so, and now has taken a 50% haircut.

A 50% haircut at the beginning of the biggest fight for the last mile.

My conclusion is that the telcos know that cable will probably win the battle, so why fight them when you can BUY them.

Why invent a new way to get into homes and businesses (at reasonable rates) when the cable companies have the infrastructure in place.

Sure xDSL (and others) will be popular but if cable gets an early strong hold. Think of what they can provide.

Cable TV
Telephone
Alarm services
Video Phone
Internet
Home schooling
VPN (this is going to be big for medium and small businesses)
and a thousand other un-invented things.

Regarding ASND, I believe that Mory is being very short sighted to not participate in the cable arena.

Joe
