Frank - I read an article the other day which said that Cisco was relying heavily on its expertise with SNA in competing with Nortel and Lucent. I must confess that I didn't even know what SNA was so I did a little research and found it is a protocol developed by IBM for its token ring network architecture. At first, it was used only in mainframes and then was adapted for use in peer to peer networking. The article said that Cisco has about 95% of the business in linking and routing SNA to TCP-IP and Bay Networks has the other 5%. Do you happen to know how many Token Ring Networks are still around using SNA. I understand that Token Ring networks with fiber-optic cable are capable of transferring data at very high speeds. Do you have an opinion as to how much of this old legacy hardware is going to be rendered obsolete by the cost of upgrading the equipment to become Y2K compliant. It would seem as though a lot of those old mainframes would have embedded silicon with a large upgrade expense to become Y2K compliant. It would also seem that Cisco and Bay would both be competing for the upgrade business. Do you know of any other companies that have an SNA to TCP-IP gateway.

Your comments and knowledge are always appreciated.

Ken
