Paul, I just spoke with an account holder at Southwest Securities who read our posts. He told me that commissions were high but stock remains marginable all the way down to $2. With a mixed portfolio he will get a margin call below 30% equity to bring it up to 40%.

Apparently the brokerage houses have some leeway in setting their own requirements. The effect, of course, is still to force liquidation of shares if the account holder does not have additional cash to deposit whenever market value of his stock drops below the % requirement.
