>>I believe there is a reasonable expectation the WD drive will fail. For this reason the extended warranty makes sense to me.
ZP (and Street Walker too), are you aware that WD has a three-year warrantee on their drives? They do. I (and virtually everyone else) who has had WD 1.6 gig drives had them fail. I've had three of them fail, BUT WD cross-shipped me a new drive in each case, no hassle, very few questions. Second or third day delivery, and I was back in business. Yes, I had to pay return shipping. Four bucks apiece, I think, or maybe six, from the east coast to the west coast. Otherwise, absolutely no hassle. I did have to provide a credit card for cross shipment in case I didn't return the orginal, but no charge on it unless you don't ship the failed one back within thirty days.
Of course, everyone hates a failure, but we're talking about if it happens here.
BTW, all other major drive manufacturers have similar warrantees and policies. I just happen to have dealt with WD, so I can vouch for their top-notch service when a problem occurs. I also have several WD drives that have been running more or less continuously since 1992 and are still clunking along (210mb and 325 mb).
As I understand it, WD had a problem with their 1.6g 3-platter thin-film head drives, which they claim has been fixed. I have not heard of similar problems with other series. I have a couple of 2.1g WD drives which have been operating now for several years each also, though not since 1992 <ggg>.
