Our geophysics department has 50 SUN workstations
(mostly sparc 10s and 1000s). We went to sun products
in 1990 from VAX mainframes.
At the time SUN was above all in computing/networking power
and reliability, and this was the main reason for
making the transition.
However, this morning our Systems people just told us found out
that by end of Jan. we likely will have a PC sitting in front of
us. The dep't intens to sell 2/3 of the SUNS and but the fastest PCs.
Reason: Cost and speed. PCs are cheaper and just as fast, and good
third part software exists from NCD or Netmanage will be used for TCP/IP connectivity to the Suns and few Macs.
He says he can get 8K for most of the SUNs.
He says the physics dep't and others are also contemplating similar
reversals back to PCs.
Just a comment from a concerned SUNW shareholder.
