Gene,

<Q4 will probably be the indicator of future AMD success. I think if they blow that quarter prospects won't be too bright.>

Well at least the rolling target slogan of "things will be better next quarter" has now been moved out to things will be better in two quarters <g>.

If AMD remains unprofitable in Q4 (Christmas season quarter) I wonder how many people will give up on AMD. My guess is not many...they will simply listen to and believe Jerry's promises for a bright future in 1999.

<The business plan must be based on achieving profitability at some future level of volume, price and manufacturing costs.>

Agreed. But if you have been following AMD for the past few years then you are aware that their own "business plan" called for profitability many many quarters ago. Simply put, Jerry's approach has not succeeded in the face of continued promises from the company and great expectations from the analysts. When battling an industry giant like Intel you need every bit of resource and talent you can gather. A weak management team is a gaping hole in any company, but it's much more critical in a company facing the tasks that AMD has been facing.

<But I also don't think they're as stupid as most on this thread believe.>

Clearly, you "don't think they're as stupid" as I do. IMO, they are even less competent than most people here realize. Losses have continued to accelerate in a time when they supposedly have the best most competitive product line ever. Heck, they were better off in the 286/386 days. I sincerely feel sorry for their engineers who have done an admirable job of trying to stay competitive only to have their efforts mismanaged by a cheap used cars salesman.
