If you can possibly swing the green I recommend you go for a PC with a 350 MHz P2. The 350MHz and 400MHz computers use a 100MHz system bus which is substantially faster and better (longer lasting) than the 66MHz system bus on all lesser varieties. You can get a 350MHz P2 without monitor from Gateway (G6-350HE, std price is closer to $2K but you can custom configure it to strip out the monitor, DVD, fancy speakers, and desktop case) for $1500.

P.S. Be careful about the modem. In the not too distant future the V.90 standard will be pervasive, but in the mean time you really need to match your ISP's either 56Kflex or X2 protocol.
