Steve, the problem with keeping Clinton in office is that he has lost his credibility. I think it is much more dangerous to have a president in office who cannot be trusted generally, than to try, try again with someone new. A significant percentage of the population believes those were Monica missiles which he lobbed last week, to the tune of $79 million. I don't think it is healthy when basic integrity cannot be counted.
I think you might be having a little disconnect because you don't live in America. My daughter knows way too much about semen stains, DNA samples, "unusual" sexual practices, and receptive oral sex. The children who live here are operating under mushy rules of what is right and wrong. Hillary is a horrible example for young women, in the sense that she tolerates behavior that self-respecting females should not. All in all, they are just really bad role models, and recent events have left bad tastes in a lot of American mouths in addition to Monica's.
I think it would also be useful to point out that this is not private behavior. I believe Bush had a mistress--if I recall correctly, her name was Jennifer Fitzgerald. But I don't really care, because he did manage to conduct himself in a dignified way and keep his sexual conduct discreet. My daughter never found out anything about his preferred sex practices, and that is exactly how I would like to keep it. Billy, on the other hand, had sex with a low-level governmental employee young enough to be his daughter. They were both on company time, and it happened in his office at work. He then dragged out members of the Congress and the Cabinet to defend his credibility, and utilized government lawyers paid with our tax dollars to defend him. Not only that, but all his privilege challenges really weakened the office of the presidency. |
