Dear Diana,

You've started an interesting thread. I also saw an ad that made me pause. This summer, one of the Miller Beer ads includes some of the song, "Alone Again Or" off the Love Forever Changes album (vintage 1969, I believe). This is a pretty good song and, in fact, was a favorite of my brother's. He played it often. It was sort of a theme for him and he learned to perform it on his guitar. He wasn't bad. He died last February of a heart attack and we played it at his funeral. I cannot hear this song without thinking of my brother.

I have nothing against the Miller company and the fact that they selected this song means nothing to me, other than I am reminded of my brother when they play the commercial. I wouldn't buy there beer in any case. It just doesn't matter. The song is good. It will outlive the Miller ad and only a select few will remember it in a few years. The song will live on. So will "Somewhere Over the Rainbow". They will use it only as long as it sells Dial soap.

Finally, I find it ironic, this commercial playing a song that reminds me of my brother. He would have the last laugh. You see, he had an exceptional mind for trivia. And he was very good about coming up with the theme songs for ads that were aired in the 50's and 60's. He remembered the commercials. Now they remember him!
