Bay Networks Commands Over Half of Layer 3 Switching Market; Next-Generation Technology Leader Also Prevails in Gigabit Ethernet Market

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 24, 1998--Bay Networks,(R) Inc. (NYSE:BAY), the pioneer in routing switch technology, continues its number one position as the leading provider of Layer 3 routing switches, according to a study just released by market research firm The Dell'Oro Group.

The report shows that Bay Networks continues to prevail as the market leader in this fast-growing technology segment which, according to Dell'Oro, grew 45 percent from the previous quarter and is expected to reach $3 billion by the year 2000. Bay Networks captured 53 percent of the Layer 3 routing switch market, growing revenues by 71 percent and market share by eight percentage points from the previous quarter.

In addition, in its first full quarter of Gigabit Ethernet switch shipments, Bay Networks captured over half the total Layer 3 Gigabit Ethernet switch market with 51 percent revenue share. Bay Networks also dominated the overall Gigabit Ethernet market segment with 28 percent of revenue share.

These market numbers represent Bay Networks' continued delivery of proven Enterprise frame switching solutions that leverage the newest capabilities -- including advanced application support such as Quality of Service and Class of Service, multiple levels of redundancy and advanced-level management -- to provide high-performance networks that support business-critical applications.

"Since we pioneered the routing switch market in 1997, we have consistently been a technology and market leader," said Dave Shrigley, executive vice president of marketing, sales and service for Bay Networks. "Commanding over half the entire Layer 3 switching market, and leading in Gigabit Ethernet switching demonstrates strong customer acceptance of our powerful enterprise switching solutions that combine Accelar(tm) routing switches with BayStack(tm) desktop and workgroup switches."
