Lawrence, you're hitting the nail right on the head with all this great stuff on Japan..... but there's something more behind it and the whole region - rampant corruption. They will all fail to emerge from their economic hellholes until something is done to quell this problem that seems to infest the entire region (except Australia and New Zealand, as I believe both may be the only innocent victims in the whole mess). Examples: The kickbacks, bribes and flimsy accounting practices in Japan, including indictment of MOF officials; The increasing violence and proliferation of organized crime in Taiwan and China; The crimes of the Suharto family: The death threats being levied in Thailand against bank officers demanding repayment of loans by prominent businessmen; The crimes and disarray left years ago by Marcos in the Philippines: and the kickbacks, pampering, bribes and corruption of HK property kings.
I think the entire pac rim needs a Rudy Giuliani.
One last thing... The fed can remedy all this nonsense about the longbond being under the funds rate by just lowering the funds rate a 1/4 point. That is the word on the street, rather than them lowering regular ST rates. This is the consensus right now, as a slight cut is being priced into the fed funds futures contract. Though if you want to trade it, you better have a BIG bankroll. Contract size = $5M!
