Valid point but invalid when it comes to market share in terms of ports. Secondly its cost that counts. If Ascend or 3Com make their cost of production per port cheaper then for the same and even more ports shipped their revenue can be lesser but with the same gross margins. That in my opinion is gaining market share.
Has anyone seen Cisco quote their installed RAC base at UUNET, PSINET, AOL, Mindspring etc. the top ISPs that have most POPs around the nation and who will be the ones first willing to add additional services by upgrading equipment such as 56k, VOIP etc (hence incremental revenue to incumbents like Ascend and 3Com) ??
No, because their growth in ports is mostly in the enterprise arena who will soon turn to outside sources for further growth because its cost prohibitive.
