For measuring commodity prices, I can think of two readily available indices that I would use before the CRB. The first, I mentioned in a post last week is the Journal of Commerce Index reported in Barron's each week. It is a weighted average and does not include precious metals and softs (coffee, cocoa).

Another good index is found in "The Economist". It is computed for food, and several types of industrials as well as in a composite index. The greatest plus for this index is that they take out the currency component by reporting it in US Dollars, Sterling and SDR's. Very useful.
