Hal, I expect that most people actually use perhaps 10-20 programs and Mac and Wintel are quite capable for all uses.
unsophisticated users cite this reason that they have been fed by Wintel salesmen, as usual FUD lives on (fear, uncertainty and doubt)
Name a task that there is only a Wintel program for (an App, not a utility that is CPU specific, many utilities are not needed for Mac as they lack the problems the utility was intended to fix)
