) DELL's current competitors, with the exception of Gateway, are simply not
serious about adopting the direct model in a manner which would allow them to
compete with DELL's efficiencies, and promote re-growth of their market share.

This is not a barrier to entry...this is a statement about the current environment which may or may not continue.

2) No start-up can put the manufacturing and support structures in place, and seize
enough market share to outpace DELL at this point. Trends clearly indicate that the
top-tier manufacturers, as a group, are the only ones growing market share, and that
this is likely to continue as time moves forward.

Manufacturing? DELL doesn't have any manufacturing they simply assemble alredy built components. True that a start-up would have a challenge but Compaq, Gateway, IBM, HP are not start-ups and could spin off or build a targeted effort to go after what appears to be a lucrative business for DELL. Furthermore, DELL was a start-up at one point in the midst of these existing companies. What precludes this from happening again?
