Business Editors & Telecommunications Writers
DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 24, 1998-- Bosch Telecom, Inc. and LMDS license holder, US Unwired, today announced that the two companies are in the process of conducting the first U.S. commercial trial of a Local Multipoint Distribution Services (LMDS) network since the completion of the FCC auction.
The trial started on July 31 with a fully functional LMDS system, and is being conducted in Lake Charles, La. By mid-October, the trial system will be further integrated into US Unwired's network with the purpose of verifying the LMDS access capabilities and understanding the deployment and operation implications of LMDS networks. US Unwired will also test the integration of LMDS with existing US Unwired infrastructures and assess the end-user acceptance of LMDS services.
"Both companies saw a need for a creative solution that could easily be modified as wireless broadband market requirements change and we envisioned LMDS as that solution," said Robert Piper, president of US Unwired. "US Unwired is prepared to lead in the development of this advanced wireless technology by being the first license holder to conduct the LMDS trial."
Bosch Telecom will provide its SpectraPoint LMDS equipment and network integration services to deploy the fully integrated LMDS network. US Unwired will incorporate the LMDS equipment into its existing network and will operate the system.
During the trial, large and medium-sized customers such as hospitals, banks, petrochemical plants and the entertainment industry in Lake Charles, La. will receive data, voice and video services via the LMDS network. In the future, US Unwired plans to offer services to additional businesses and residents in select cities within its region of Louisiana and Texas.
"Our relationship will enable US Unwired to meet the explosive business demands for broadband data, voice and video services that are currently not met by traditional service providers," said Ed Cantwell, CEO of Bosch Telecom. "With more than four years of experience developing LMDS networks, this commercial trial is another indication of our increasing leadership in the industry."
