*OFF TOPIC* I know that this will sound very un-American, however it probably would be the best thing for Russia to have a strong-man take over. Here's why:

1) Just because it's a strong man doesn't mean they will be hostile to the United State, so it does not necessarily follow that we will be spending money on another cold war

2) Corruption is prevalent at all levels of government, from traffic cops to cabinet members...it's just the way they do business of running the country. Incidentally, an obscene amount of the financial aid (IMF etc) that we give them does not end up in the right hands. A strong man would have the potential to get things back in order by clamping down on corruption.

The current system is incapable of reforming itself and combating corruption and the practice of bribing officials. There needs to be some powerful political events in order to shake things up and shift power. However, there is no guarantee that a strong-man would be any better.

3) It is possible to have a relatively capitalist economy without democracy, however this situation would not last very long unless it had support. There are other systems besides capitalism/democracy and communism/command economy. These are just the ones that we're most familiar with.

Sorry for the off topic post on this thread. Feel free to disagree. I'd be interested to hear some opinions until we get kicked out of here.

Ted
