james--

thanks.lebed is who is needed right now. yeltsin should step down. if anyone has the balls to stand up to the communist and nationalist factions its him. yeltsin just seems more and more like a miserable old drunk.

the problem is the country is so damn corrupt. if they would root out the corruption and build ( a first for russia) and actual working economy things would get a lot better really quick. for now, i see a russo-japanese alliance. the japs need raw materials...the russians have them, and the russians need japanese investment and skill.

part of the problem is that no one seems able to acknowledge that the russians have done things badly. they havent had the good times/bad times cycle. its like the depression run amok...the rich are insulated and getting richer, and the poor get stepped all over. russia today is a good case study in what capitalism run amok can do. so, the poor hate capitalism as much as communism because they see that in either system they dont get a chance.

IMHO, they should have handled things more like the chinese, with a gradual movement.

good luck to all,
trey
