<Have you looked at any Hyperion applications?>

Actually I looked into a couple. They have a relationship with a specialty valaution firm (ALCAR) which is a potential competitor of mine.

<I find your comments about the acceptance of NT 4.0 to be irrelevant, you're leading the argument to where the market will be in 4 or 5 years. >

You may find them irrelevant, but the market in which Hyperion trades equity may not. My original question was whether the MSFT presence in the market would pose a threat to Hyperion's market performance. The markets forward looking horizon is about 3 to 5 years. This is why I mentioned Sun and ORCL, for although they still very viable and profitable companies, the market has discounted thier future. I am not saying this is true for Hyperion, but the possibility definitely exists.

<My point is the analytical world will be a market for both tools and applications. MSFT will be a major (but not the sole) tools provider, but HYSL's strategic direction is headed towards being much more of an end to end solutions provider - different business model and different target markets. MSFT does not seem intent or capable of providing the business specific expertise and domain knowledge that enterprise applications providers are delivering. I doubt MSFT is planning on entering the supply chain business, sales force automation or applications of analytical technology.>

Microsoft focuses solely on the sale of software and the acquisitionof new media properties which will allow it to set the standards to sell more software. One of the primary reasons they have been so successful in doing this is the extremely fertile developer network they have developed. Commodity priced software sold in volume, coupled with the value add of industry specific consulting firms have toppled many unwary end to end software companies in the past. I live in the New York area and it is rife with MSFT specific consultants, ex. micromodeling.com and to a lesser extent tisny.com . These guys do a lot RAD and high end custom development business on the MSFT platforms. I also know that they see a very large and untapped revenue stream in SQL 7.0/Plate/Office 2000.

Remember, I am simply playing devil's advocate, but that doesn't mean you should discount the relevancy of the posts.
