Re: Thoughts on value. IMO the $9.50 value you refer to represents the "old LSI" minus the $760 million in cash. I don't think the old LSI could be valued at $9.50 if it still had that cash which would be invested and earning interest.

Share price now seems to reflect analysts estimate of 1998 annual earnings of .80 +/- and a PE of 19 to 20 which applies to the lower half of the S&P 500 group. Most investors and analysts probably don't have a solid handle on the financial performance of Symbios and are not yet comfortable with adding in future earnings. Maybe this creates the opportunity?
