I swear I was just telling someone at work about Extranets. I said '98 will be the year of the Extranet. At QUALCOMM, we are working on a project to let critical business partners access design data through an Extranet configuration using Livelink. We will give them a Livelink login account and through Livelink, publish only the data they need to see.

This is important because more and more, companies are tied closely to their suppliers, customers, and manufacturers. They will exchange data constantly and the companies that can provide these services quickly and easily will have a tremendous competitive advantage. The technology closest to this is EDI (Electronic Data Interchange), but Intranet based software provides much more cabability at less cost.

There are still security issues to be worked out, but everybody (including OpenText) is working on that right now. The Extranet is the next step in the development of the Web, but only the technically advanced companies are adopting the technology today. I see '98 as the year of the Extranet because of the security issues. Hopefully it will be sooner because OpenText is positioning itself right now.

It's great to work at QUALCOMM because we pride ourselves on being at the forefront of technology and using it as a competitive advantage. We have had an Intranet for over 3 years and we were Livelink customers before they were part of OpenText because we realized the value of their technology and the vision of the people in the company.
