Anthony: Last week Dr. Willaima Steers of the University of Virginia said the the number of deaths associated with Viagra is not surprising.
"If you age-index it for how many medical problems the individuals have and you take out those who took it inappropriately with nitrates or nitroglycerin, I don't know of any huge disasters," he said. Message 5534952
Tonight's research project was a quick calculation on the predicted number of deaths in a given month for all males greater than 45 years... and the expected number of deaths on the same day that these men experienced sexual activity. Here's the stats and findings:
Estimated # of males >45 years taking Viagra per month: 700,000 Source: Average Viagra New Rxs (April to July 1998)
Death rate for all males >45 Years: 1,600 per 1,000,000 per month Source: National Center for Health Statistics www3.techstocks.com
Expected # deaths of 700,000 males >45 years: 1,120 per month
Expected # deaths of 700,000 males >45 years in 4 months: 4,480
Average # days of sexual activity in a given year for an active male (Source Sex in America: 1994): 96/365 (26%)
Estimated # deaths of 700,000 males >45 years in 4 months on the same day that they experienced sexual activity: 1,165
Conclusion: According to the government's mortality rates, if you followed 700,000 males 45 years and older (healthy and ill), you would anticipate that 4,480 of these men would die during a 4 month period. Moreover, it is estimated that 1,165 of these men would die on the same day that they experienced sexual activity during this four month period.
QED: Dr Steers' comments and the FDA current findings concerning the safety of Viagra are supported by this analysis.
This seems to make sense to me. Anyone have any comments or suggestions?
