Pilots in BA-American alliance set to unveil pact
WASHINGTON, Aug 24 (Reuters) - Pilots flying for airlines
participating in the pending American Airlines-British Airways
<BAY.L> alliance are due to unveil an agreement this week that
pledges to protect each other's interests.
"The pilot unions have responded by forming a coalition
with one another designed to protect the interests of each
carrier's pilots," said Gregg Overman, spokesman for the Allied
Pilots Association that represents pilots at AMR Corp's <AMR.N>
American Airlines.
The pact, due to be signed in Tokyo on Wednesday, is aimed
at preventing the 10 carriers involved from leveraging one
pilot group against another or transferring work normally done
by one pilot group to another, Overmann said.
American and British Airways announced plans for a
trans-Atlantic marketing alliance more than two years ago but
have still not cleared regulatory hurdles in both Europe and
the United States.
Other airlines with links to the two main alliance partners
are: Japan Airlines <9201.T> , Canadian Airlines <CA.TO> ,
Qantas Airways <QAN.AX> , Iberia Airlines, Aerolineas
Argentinas, Lot Polish Airline, Finnair <FINN.HE> and Lanchile
Airlines.
Pilots at the competing Northwest Airlines Corp.
<NWAC.O>-KLM trans-Atlantic alliance already have a tradition
of supporting each other.
Dutch airline KLM said last week it had begun legal action
against its pilots' union to force it to withdraw a call for
KLM staff to take strike action in support of any strike move
by their colleagues at Northwest.
