There was a recent article in the LA Times discussing crime in Latin America. Measured by murder rates, Latin America is the world's most violent region. The homicide rate is six times the world's average and four times the rate of the United States.

Another interesting fact from the article. In Santiago, Chile, armed robberies increased 62% between 1995 and 1997 according to a private Chilean think tank.

In a separate front page article in the LA Times, there was a discussion how Americans feel less safe now than four years ago, even though the crime rate has gone down! They partly attribute this attitude to increased crime coverage on television. (COPS etc.)

MACE has many opportunities at home and overseas. With the stock markets crashing in Latin America, it can only add to the feeling of uncertainty in the region. Perhaps Mace should hire more salesmen with their cash hoard!
