American Expands Codeshare Services to Central America; San Francisco, Houston and Washington, D.C. are New U.S. Gateways for Codeshare Partnership With Grupo TACA

August 25, 1998 10:09 AM

FORT WORTH, Texas, Aug. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- American Airlines announced today that it is expanding its codesharing services with Grupo TACA between the United States and Central America to include routes to and from San Francisco, Houston and Washington, D.C.

American already codeshares on Grupo TACA between Central America and Dallas/Fort Worth and Los Angeles.

A reciprocal codesharing alliance between American and Grupo TACA, a family of five Central American airlines, was approved by the Department of Transportation in May. TACA began implementing its part of the alliance in June when it placed its code on American's flights between Dallas/Fort Worth and six U.S. cities -- Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Newark and Seattle.

In July, American placed its "AA" code on Grupo TACA flights on four Central American routes -- DFW-Guatemala City; DFW-San Jose, Costa Rica, via Guatemala City; Los Angeles-Guatemala City, and Los Angeles San-Salvador.

Starting this month, American is adding four additional Central American routes to its Grupo TACA codeshare services:

San Francisco -- San Salvador Houston Bush Intercontinental -- Roatan, Honduras (Saturday only) Houston Bush -- San Salvador Washington Dulles -- San Salvador

At least eight more Central American routes will be added to the codesharing network this fall, said Gerard J. Arpey, American's senior vice president of finance and planning.

"Our codesharing services with Grupo TACA are rapidly building momentum," Arpey said. "The result is more service and more choices for those traveling and shipping between the United States and Central America."

A key element of the American-Grupo TACA partnership is a fully reciprocal frequent flyer program, which was introduced last March. It allows American's AAdvantage participants to accrue mileage credit and redeem travel awards on Grupo TACA carriers, and Grupo TACA's frequent flyer participants to accrue mileage credit and redeem travel awards on American's flights.

The family of Grupo TACA airlines consists of TACA International of El Salvador and its affiliate partners -- AVIATECA of Guatemala, LACSA of Costa Rica, NICA of Nicaragua, and TACA de Honduras.
