"...
Luanda's state-owned Journal d'Angola reported Tuesday that 942 people had died in the battle for the western garrison town of Kitona Sunday.

The newspaper, supporting Kabila's contention that the rebellion is in fact an invasion by Rwanda and Uganda, said all the casualties were from those countries on Congo's eastern border.

The newspaper said rebels holding the Inga hydro-electric power utility on the Congo River, west of Kinshasa, were trying to negotiate a safe surrender.

It said the rebels, who have cut power to the capital for eight nights in a row, were threatening to destroy the utility if they were not granted safe passage out of the area."
