jhg, restatement of numbers is always a fear in investing, but here are some general symptoms to watch out for:

positive earnings and negative cash flows;
growing differentials between provision for income taxes and income taxes paid;
unreasonably small charges for depreciation;
large increases in DSO;

Dell exhibits none of these symptoms.

There is only one symptom that would ordinarily cause me to raise my eyebrows: Dell has significantly outperformed all of its rivals for several years running. However, there is nothing in the company's 10-Ks or 10-Qs that leads me to conclude that there is the remotest chance of these results being the result of "creative accounting".

By way of credentials, I smelled out the OXHP debacle before it occurred.
