Network launched for HK trading firms
HONG KONG, Aug 25 (Reuters) - CargoNet, a Hong Kong on-line services company, announced on Tuesday an electronic network that allow firms in international trade to do business with each other, eliminate paperwork and cut costs.
The Arena network provides access to trade-related services offered by companies in transportation, finance, insurance, information services and government, Ian Craig, chief executive of the three-year-old CargoNet, said at a news conference.

Subscribing to the service costs HK$688 (US$89) per month. It is aimed at small to medium-sized import and export companies, which number 230,000 in Hong Kong, Craig said, but there are plans to expand in Asia ''in the short term.''

Customers will be able to conduct business on-line while saving on labour, communications and other costs, Craig said.

He said the service's innovations would help Hong Kong remain competitive among the world's major trading centres and at a time of economic challenges.

The U.S. firm Electronic Data Systems Corp (EDS - news) holds a 22 percent share in CargoNet.
