Well, we're back to the argument of "Why do we need a competitive marketplace? After all, Microsoft makes an OS and some apps. that everyone already knows how to use."

Better yet, why don't we get the government to mandate that Microsoft will be the one to make all our software. That way you free up resources at all these other competing companies, so that they can do something more productive. We could go a step further and say that Microsoft employees are well trained in that area. They should just stay there. Allowing them to take a job elsewhere would not be efficient. We don't need a competitive job market either. If the government went ahead and determined salaries, why, that would make it even more fair.

No doubt some governments have taken this approach, only to find out that they forgot to put something in the recipe that would motivate and inspire people.
