As I read the negative prospecting on IBIS by the interested shorts I was amazed at the ability of these giraffes to stick their necks out on this particular issue. While the reasoning that IBM will not continue to buy implanters every quarter is sound, it ignores the breadth of the silicon wafer manufacturing industry and the potential for that industry to embrace IBIS in newly formed technical alliances. It also ignores the fact that IBM does not have an exclusive arrangement with IBIS, and that a large base for future licensing revenues has been formed.

IBM's wholesale adoption of IBIS's SOI technology speaks volumes to the rest of the industry. IBM will be in large scale production of SOI chips in 1999. The rest of the industry is still mute relative to their own schedule. IBM will also be in large scale production of copper chips in 1999. It's hard to believe that the other major players will be sitting on their hands for the rest of the year while IBM pushes the envelope of performance and efficiency.

All it takes is one more news release to pump up the volume on IBIS. One might look to Rambus Technology as an example of what might happen with IBIS in the next several months. The earnings estimates for 1999, only 4 months away, have not been valued into the stock price inclusive of licensing revenue from the IBM deal. Remember, it's what happens next that counts.

Long IBIS,
