NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Dell Computer Corp. said Tuesday it plans to open a manufacturing and customer center in Alvorada, Brazil. The computer giant said it hopes to begin manufacturing, sales, service and support operations at the plant, its eighth worldwide, beginning next year. Dell did not disclose financial details of the investment, which is pending government approval. Dell said it plans to manufacture the company's desktop computer systems for customers in the Mercosul region, which includes Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and Chile. The company expects to employ more than 250 people at the Brazil plant in the next two years. "This move places us closer to our customers in a market that presents excellent long-term growth opportunities for Dell," said Kevin Rollins, Dell vice chairman.
Among Dell's other international plants are a customer center in Penang, Malaysia, as well as plans to open a facility in Xiamen, China, later this year. Dell (DELL) shares were up 4-1/4 to 123-3/8 in midday trading.
