The Launching Pad IT Index (I T I)
For the week ending 08/21/1998
The IT Index has had a poor showing of late sparked by the downturn in
the Dow and Nasdaq indexes, with several of the front runners of the
sector being made to pay for not living up to the revenue expectations
of investors. Internet Telephony stocks have provided good returns,
however, those returns are now based on a few large movers, to offset the
downward bias on these stocks. The latest round of earnings have shown
some developing trends to follow for the coming months.
ETEL and RMII have continued to retain much of the earlier gains and
weathered earnings that were not spectacular, but were in line with
predicted revenue. As such, they have found solid bases to await an
upturn. IDTC had escaped the hit in the sector, until the past few
weeks. Down from their all time high of 40.25, they had established a
trading range in the 28 dollar range. However this week IDTC touched the
lowest level since November. Regarded as an early leader in selling
Internet Telephony minutes, the promotion has exceeded the revenue, thus
far. NMSS, NSPK and VOCLF are trying to gain strength but as the market
has moved in the opposite direction, there has been little head way.
The early trend of the hot Micro Cap IT stocks has also reversed. NTRX,
ACCR, FTEL and LKON are all near their lows for the year, and are down
well over 50% each. These stocks are have yet to show the revenues
necessary to move into the Mid Cap level, but in the next two quarters,
could very well follow the paths of OZEMY and ETEL.
