NORTH SIOUX CITY, S.D.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 25, 1998--

Leading-edge feature set and price make the company's newest
notebook the ideal presentation and traveling machine

Gateway (NYSE: GTW), a global leader in the direct marketing of PCs, today announced the immediate availability of the new Solo 5150. This road-warrior notebook redefines the Solo 5000 series with a new feature set for optimum performance among portable PCs in the thin and light category.
" Gateway helped pioneer the thin and light notebook category almost a year ago with the Solo 5100, and the Solo 5150 builds upon that notebook's form factor and core components," said Bob Burnett, vice president, mobile systems. "The Solo 5150 continues this leadership role with leading-edge technology at excellent price points, making the Solo 5150 an outstanding value for Gateway clients."

While the form factor on the Solo 5150 notebook is the same as the Solo 5100, the addition of a new video and DVD (Digital Versatile Disk) accelerator, a brighter LCD panel, and a different battery give the Solo 5150 a new level of performance and technology.

Solo 5150 Modularity
The Solo 5150 is now the most flexible notebook within the Solo
series, with its media bays supporting DVD -ROM, CD-ROM, floppy disk
drive, 120MB SuperDisk(TM), and a weight saver module. This
flexibility helps make the Solo 5150 very scalable and an ideal choice
for business clients who have a variety of users with different needs.

DVD Technology
Solo 5150 clients can get exceedingly more storage capacity with
DVD -ROM than they can with CD-ROM, storage which is necessary for
increasingly complex software. An optional PC card DVD decoder
provides a high-quality, full-featured DVD solution. This transforms
the Solo 5150 into an entertainment system, allowing users to watch
full-length feature films on their notebook.

DVD technology is now an option across the entire Solo notebook line.

New Video, Battery and LCD Panel for Increased Performance
The Solo 5150 implements NeoMagic's new MagicMedia256AV
multimedia accelerator for high performance video and DVD . Another
performance enhancement is the new intelligent, 50-watt-hour battery.
This battery has an external gauge. By pressing a button on the
battery, a client can see exactly how much charge is left.
In addition to this new technology, the 5150's new 14.1-inch,
135-nit LCD panel provides Gateway clients with a brighter display for
easier viewing.

Manageability for Corporate Clients
The Solo 5150 has a strong manageability emphasis, with all
corporate systems shipping with LANDesk(R) Client Manager 3.3
installed. The BIOS on the Solo 5150 is also DMI 2.0-compatible. The
5150 shares common modularity of many of its components with other
notebooks in the Solo line. System memory, power adapters and other
peripherals are interchangeable with the Solo 2500 and 9100. Gateway
notebooks also share common docking.

Common modularity allows Gateway clients to lower their total cost of ownership by reducing the inventories of component parts required to support notebook users.
