First Japanese Enterprise Enters Israel: Fujitsu to Set Up R&D Center in Herzliya
By Ella Jacoby

The Japanese concern Fujitsu is setting up an R&D center in Israel. The center, located in Herzliya will specialize in microelectronics. Fujitsu has purchased the Israeli R&D center of US company Ross Semiconductors, which declared bankruptcy and is currently in liquidation. The amount involved in the deal was not disclosed.

This is the first R&D center the giant Japanese concern is setting up in Israel. Fujitsu is among Japan's four leading concerns, with annual sales turnover totaling $40 billion.

On completion of the acquisition, Ross Semiconductors Israel, established in 1995, will become Fujitsu Microelectronics Israel, a fully owned subsidiary of the Japanese Fujitsu group. The company will serve as the VLSI planning center of the Fujitsu Semiconductors group.

Ross's R&D center in Israel served Fujitsu as a customer for several years. It designed embedded computer chips especially for the company. When Ross encountered difficulties, Fujitsu was offered purchase of the US company, but it chose to purchase only the activity in Israel. According to Yoav Telgam, this was due to the Israeli center's success in developing leading technology in the field of embedded processors at low cost and within a short time span, and the good relations between the R&D center in Israel and Fujitsu's planning group in Japan. Telgam, founder of the Israeli branch, will head the Fujitsu subsidiary.
