As in regular social activities, lies, deceit and arrogance create mistrust. These are characters of Microsoft. Why should people trust Microsoft. All they care about is money and dominance, not about the customer. This will be their downfall.

Unknowledgeable CIO's and CEO's can't distinguish fact from marketing. That is why NT is projected to be dominant. These are the decision makers who project that forecast. The costs of staying with Microsoft products will be realized by these people, and they will be a little more knowledgeable after verifying Y2K compliance in their organizations.

When was the last time Microsoft was forthright in telling the user community about security holes, serious bugs, or the truth about Y2K compliance with it's products. They do the Clinton, and deny it until someone speaks out with the truth.

As in social circles, people will begin to distance themselves from liars, cheats and the dishonest. Microsoft will begin to alienate the user community with their attitude. The Y2K problem will give IS professionals more input into enterprise software decisions. The Y2K issue will give them more visibility, and thus more credibility. They will provide more input for the decision makers. The truth, not marketing will be read to these decision makers.

Keep an eye on what America is going to pay to get Microsoft Office products Y2K compliant. This will be fresh in the minds of the decision makers when NT 5.0 finally rolls out. The costs and headaches will be fresh in their minds. The HIGH costs of staying with Microsoft.

Microsoft does not innovate. The GUI was developed by Xerox at it's PARC facility near Stanford University, along with much more of what the PC is today. The truth will be known about Microsoft by those who don't know it now. They are better at PR than they are at developing stable softaware.

Microsoft has some good products, but they are a monster in terms of resources and money to maintain. This can't go on forever.

An OS like Linux and NetWare will benefit from those who realize the cost of being a pure Windows shop. It's very expensive, and difficult to maintain running without the normal Windows glitches. These alternate OS's have the opportunity to shine while Windows NT continues in beta.

As a CNE and IS professional, I feel NetWare has high technical merits, and a mature Directory Service. Microsoft will learn by the market how to develop a Directory, since they do not have one now. Microsoft says you may need to deploy multiple domains in order to handle directory replication. That defeats the whole purpose of a directory, thus eliminating any advantage of depolying their directory services or their OS.

Novell will prosper in the future. Know-nothing CEO's will learn the truth from their staff. Microsoft will be known for what they really are: Marketing muscle and high-tech copy-cats. The Microsoft is still there, but the truth will be known in the end.

Just my two cents worth.
